GRASS 4.2 Sites Format and API
In releases previous to 4.2, sites lists, simple GRASS ASCII files for
punctual data, were very loosely defined. GRASS libraries contained
very little support for sites applications. As more and more
programmers began writing applications utilizing sites lists,
different interpretations of a standard format of sites lists
developed. Consequently, some sites lists that were valid for one
application were invalid for others. Without an application
programming interface (API), programming was difficult. Therefore, to
make site application programming easier, a standard sites list format
has been developed.
Application Programming Interface
With a standard format for data representation, it was
possible to develop a set of C functions and data types
to operate on sites lists.
